Definition of the words in the topic:

  • Minority languages in Hong Kong: People who are neither native speakers of Cantonese nor English in Hong Kong

  • Dominant language: Top 10 of the most widely spoken languages by "First language" speakers which include Chinese, Spanish, English, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese and Standard German 1

  • Identity: The qualities, beliefs, etc., that make a particular person or group different from others. There are four types of identity, which includes master identity, personal identity, interactional identity and relational identity 2

     

 

Objectives of our Project:

  • To investigate whether people using dominant languages and non-dominant languages have influences on their identity recognition and self-esteem

  • To increase people’s awareness on linguistic minorities
